Martinez has been coaching the Belgium national team since 2016 and won a bronze medal with them at the 2018 World Championships in Russia. The Spaniard left the Belgian team after an unsuccessful performance at the World Championships in Qatar, where the Belgian team failed to advance from the group and skipped the teams of Morocco and Croatia, the future semi-finalists of the tournament.
