“A rising sun died in America and the world on Nov. 22, 1963. Some say that we have never again seen such a rising sun in the sky as we did that morning. Even if it was cloudy or raining that day, the country and world were more innocent and optimistic at that moment than they have been since then. Some say that a piece of all of us – the hope that helps us get through another day – died that day. Others say the act just opened the eyes of many about what the U.S. government and other governments had done in our names for a long time.”

Kevin James Shay, from Death of the Rising Sun: A Search for Truth in the John F. Kennedy Assassination [1]

On November 15, several news outlets were printing up headlines announcing that Russian missiles had struck Poland killing two people. [2][3][4]

The news was alarming considering that if confirmed, Poland, a NATO ally, could cite Article 5 of the Charter which triggers a response by all members to mobilize in defense of their partner. Not until the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington has article 5 been activated! This would result in a major offensive against Russia, not just of Ukraine but of NATO nations![5]

Essentially, we were arguably on the verge of World War III!

It turns out the missiles were not from Russia, but rather “mis-fired by Ukraine in defense against Russia.” Follow-up press reports the source of information was an unnamed senior intelligence official. [6]

This incident reminds us of how close the world came to a serious confrontation in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. But at that time, the President of the United States, John F Kennedy, had meaningful talks with the Soviets. While described as a high stakes staring contest which the President won, in reality, he not only promised henceforth to never invade Cuba in exchange for Soviet premier Nikita Krushchev halting work and then withdrawing nuclear armed missiles from the Caribbean country. He also secretly withdrew the nuclear-armed missiles the United States had stationed in Turkey over previous years. [7]

America is essentially reliving the days of critical tension again, almost like going back in time. Only this time without a figure like Kennedy.

The backdrop to this 59th anniversary special episode of the Global Research News Hour is the vital question, “how would we survive this confrontation between the world’s two great superpowers without the voice of a man calling for an end of the Cold War and inviting cooperation with Soviets in jointly landing a human being on the moon.” [8]

Most of the episode features the highly respected researcher and writer James DiEugenio who wrote the screenplay of Oliver Stone’s latest documentary and author of Destiny Betrayed, about the Jim Garrison investigation of the Kennedy assassination. For more than half an hour, DiEugenio talks about the recent document discoveries since Oliver Stone’s JFK debuted in 1991, the chaotic aspects of the Warren Commission set up to conclude the standard interpretation of his suicide, the original source behind the mysterious character played by Donald Sutherland, and a whole lot more. The interview is then followed by roughly ten minutes with Ed Curtin talking about where he was when he heard about Kennedy being shot, the moments in history that likely helped turn Kennedy’s critics in the military and the CIA into architects of a brutal murder, and the changes brought about to the world as a result of Kennedy’s elimination.

James DiEugenio has an MA in Contemporary American History from California State University Northridge. He authored the book Destiny Betrayed, probing the Garrison investigation of the JFK assassination, expanded in 2012. He also wrote Reclaiming Parkland in 2013 expanded again in 2016 and then re-issued again with additional material in the 2018 book The JFK Assassination: The Evidence Today. He co-authored the book The Assassinations: Probe Magazine on JFK, MLK, RFK and Malcolm X. Mr DiEugenio also has a website: kennedysandking.com with materials related to one or more of the assassination targets.

Edward Curtin is a prominent author, researcher and sociologist based in Western Massachusetts. He is a Research Associate of the Centre for Research on Globalization (CRG). He author of the recent article President John F. Kennedy: His Life and Public Assassination by the CIA.
